Reconstituting Instant Non-Fat Dry Milk
Instant Nonfat Dry Milk is regular cow's milk that has had the water and fat removed. It still has all the calcium, protein, vitamin D and minerals of fresh milk. Most manufacturers add additional Vitamins A and D for even better nutrition. It also has low cholesterol. The shelf life is about 12 months if kept in the original container.
Recipes and reconstituted dry milk can be adjusted to suit your tastes Adding more powder will give you a richer flavor, more like whole milk. Adding less powder will give you a taste like skim milk. Feel free to adjust our recipes however you like.
Mixing Ratios:
- 1 cup water ........... 1/3 cup powder
- 1/2 cup water ........ 3 tablespoons powder
- 1/3 cup water ........ 2 tablespoons powder
- 1/4 cup water ........ 1-1/2 tablespoons powder
Directions:
- Fill your pitcher or container with half the amount of water you will be using.
- Add in the appropriate amount of dry milk powder. Stir to dissolve.
- Fill the container with the balance of the water called for above. Stir again and chill.
- Store the milk in a refrigerator.
- Stir again before using.
Notes:
A substitute for Buttermilk can be made by mixing 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to one cup of reconstituted milk. Cover and store for 15 minutes at room temperature before using.
If using the powder for cooking, such as biscuits. Add the powder to the dry ingredients, mix well and then add the liquid.
